Monta Vista, 75 Los Gallardos, Valcabra, Caniles, Granada 18810, Spain
Welcome to Monta Vista, in the beautiful rural location of Caniles
Overlooking the Sierra de Baza mountains, with Mount Santa Barbara (Ht 2,269) and Mount Jabalcon (Ht 1,494) recognisable from your apartment windows, and have recognisable seasonal changes, unlike the Costas.
Because we are 911 metres above sea level here, evenings can be cooler in contrast to high daytime temperatures, so a warmer layer is recommended!
We have updated the Cortijo Monta Vista, to provide comfortable and authentic holiday accommodation for you to enjoy – be it for a few days, a week or longer, in your own, privately accessed Apartment, which affords wonderful views across the mountainous landscape.
There is much to see and do in the area. We have two lakes within easy reach, the largest of which is Lake Negratin, or the “Embalse de Negratin”, in the Altiplano de Granada. It is one of the largest reservoirs in Europe with an approximate length of 22 km. It was created in 1984 from the river Guadiana Menor. Famous for its hot springs baths¸ which had great prestige in Roman times and in the Arab Andalusian period¸ it is located between two natural parks¸ to the south¸ Sierra de Baza¸ and to the north¸ Sierras de Cazorla.
Here, you can find kayaking, pedalo’s, even a natural thermal spa pool, together with tucked away beaches, which offer privacy. There are restaurants around the Lake, notably at Freila and Zujar.
There is a modern hotel and spa facility at Zujar, near Lake Negratin, offering a variety of paid for treatments, which are bookable in advance.
There is also a beautiful hotel and restaurant, with spa, at Galera – “Hotel Galera”. They have a restaurant with sunny terrace, offering a panoramic view of the village of Galera, renown in the Altiplano area for its fascinating cave houses. You can often watch Eagles soaring on the thermals that the landscape provides.”
A rambla ( dried river bed ), easily accessible from the Cortijo, provides good cycling and walking. You can easily get to Caniles Village from here and to Baza for the more energetic. Caniles is five minutes by car; ten to fifteen minutes by bike; and Baza (pronounced “Batha”) is ten minutes by car and approximately 20 minutes by bike. Great walking and cycling trails are to be found locally and one of the best is to Mount Jabolcon – perhaps not for those who don’t like heights!
There is a recently opened trail, “Via Verde of the Sierra de Baza”, suitable for walkers and cyclists, which you can pick up a few hundred metres from Monta Vista.
The Via Verde Sierra de Baza follows the lower northern slopes of the Sierra de Baza. It lies just to the north and outside the Sierra de Baza natural park. It is 9,4 km long and runs for a few km north and south of Baza town as far as the municipal limits with Zujar and Caniles. The track of the original railway line connected villages of Zujar, Baza and Caniles and whilst this extended route can be navigated certain parts such as crossing the A-92N are blocked.
Most of the Via Verde Sierra de Baza is compressed stone and some if it, particularly through Baza town is asphalt.
Baza is the nearest Town and has all facilities you may want from Banks (including Santander), to supermarkets, clothes shops, pharmacies (Farmacia), electrical shops, tobacco and perfumery shops.
A great activity to do and learn more about Baza and its History is to book one of the special Historical Walking Tours with “One Foot In The Past”
Restaurants and cafes abound in both Caniles and Baza. You will be able to find a “Menu a Dia” in many, from about 8 Euros for two courses. Tapas is offered free, with the purchase of an alcoholic drink, in many bars.
Cuisine from Spanish to Italian and American is available. The fresh fish is wonderful and we recommend Dorada, which is a white fish, with a lovely soft texture (a little like Lemon Sole).
The area is known for its Jambon (Spanish Ham) and there are many producers in the area, including at the Village of “Seron”, about twenty minutes’ drive away, who welcome the public for purchasing and/or to look around.
Similarly, there are local vineyards, some of which offer restaurant facilities with great food – and wonderful wines (of course)!
